Also called ಭ್ರಾತೃ ದ್ವಿತೀಯ bhratru dwiteeya

On this day, Lord Yama, the brother of Yamuna had food at his sister’s house. Yamuna gave a blessing of long life to Yama while Yama blessed Yamuna with Soubhagya or long married life. So this day, every brother should visit his sister in the afternoon and have food from his sister’s hand. In case someone doesn’t have a sister, Dharma Shastra recommends going to a friend’s sister’s house and have food there and give gifts such as new clothes, ornaments etc to the sister in return. Before the sister feeds the brother on this day, the sister should offer Arghya with water to Yama facing South with the following mantra starting with “Yeh-Yehi….” (Refer below). This Arghya will please Yama who will bless her in return. Then before feeding the brother, she should look at the brother and chant the following mantra starting with “Bratah svanujata….” and then feed brother (Refer below)

ಯಮದ್ವಿತೀಯ – ಭಗಿನೀ ಹಸ್ತೇನ ಭೋಜನ

ಕಾರ್ತೀಕಮಾಸ ಶುಕ್ಲ ಪಕ್ಷದ ದ್ವಿತೀಯ ದಿನದಂದು ಸಹೋದರರು ವಿವಾಹಿತರಾದ ಸಹೋದರಿಯರ ಮನೆಗೆ ಹೋಗಿ ಭೋಜನ ಸ್ವೀಕರಿಸುವುದು ಇಂದಿನಿಂದ ವಿಶೇಷ. ಯಮಧರ್ಮರಾಜ ತನ್ನ ಸಹೋದರಿ ಯಮಿ (ನದಿ ಯಮುನ, ಸೂರ್ಯ-ಸಂಜ್ಞಾ ದೇವಿಯರ ಪುತ್ರಿ), ಮನೆಗೆ ಹೋಗಿ ಅಲ್ಲಿ ಅವಳು ನೀಡಿದ ಆತಿಥ್ಥ ಸ್ವೀಕರಿಸಿ, ಅವಳನ್ನು ಅನುಗ್ರಹಿಸಿದನು ಮತ್ತು ಅದರ ಕುರುಹಾಗಿ ಒಂದು ವರವನ್ನು ಕೇಳು ಎನ್ನುತ್ತಾನೆ . ಆಗ ಅವಳು ನನಗೆ ಯಾವುದೇ ವರ ಬೇಡ. ಪ್ರತಿ ವರ್ಷ ಇದೇ ರೀತಿ ನಮ್ಮ ಮನೆಗೆ ಬರಬೇಕೆಂದು ಕೋರುತ್ತಾಳೆ. ಅವಳ ಕೋರಿಕೆಯನ್ನು ಮನ್ನಿಸಿ ಅವಳಿಗೆ ಮತ್ತು ಎಲ್ಲಾ ಸಹೋದರರಿಗೂ ವರವೀಯುತ್ತಾನೆ.
“ಯಾರು ಕಾರ್ತೀಕ ಶುದ್ಧ ದ್ವಿತೀಯದಂದು ಅಣ್ಣತಮ್ಮಂದಿರನ್ನು ಕರೆಸಿ ಅವರಿಗೆ ಭೋಜನವೀಯುತ್ತಾರೋ, ಆ ಸಹೋದರಿಯ ಮನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಭೋಜನ ಸ್ವೀಕರಿಸಿದ ಸಹೋದರನಿಗೆ ಧೀರ್ಘಾಯಸ್ಸನ್ನು ಯಮ ಧರ್ಮರಾಜನು ಅನುಗ್ರಹಿಸಿದ್ದಾನೆ. ಸಹೋದರನಿಗೆ ಭೋಜನವಿತ್ತ ಸಹೋದರಿಗೆ ವೈಧವ್ಯವು ಪರಿಹಾರವಾಗುವುದು” ಎಂದಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಅದರ ನಿಮಿತ್ತ ಯಮದ್ವಿತೀಯ ಆಚರಣೆ ಮಾಡಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ.

After pooja, we have to do namaskara to Yama and Yamune.

It is observed on Karthika Shudda dviteeya
“Yama Dwitiya” is observed on the second day of the Shukla Paksha in Kartika maasa and is one of the celebrations during the five days of Diwali. This is to be observed in the noon by worshipping Yama dharma raja. Yama Dvitiya ಯಮ ದ್ವಿತೀಯ is associated with Lord Yama Dharmaraja,, visiting his sister Yami (Yamuna river), the daughter of Surya, and is a symbol of love between brothers and sisters. On that day, one has to do the pooja of Yama, Chitragupta and other servants of Yama dharmaraja. Ofcourse, we have to do the anusandhana of tadantargatha Bharateeramana mukhya praanantargatha Sri Lakshmi Narasimhayanamaha. We have to give argya to Yamadharmaraja.
Story behind Yama dwiteeya –
Once, Yamadharma, the Narakalokadhipathi, visited his sister, Yamuna, on the second day of the Shukla Paksha in Kartika maasa after Diwali. Yamuna welcomed her brother by applying the auspicious tilaka on his forehead. Then the brother and sister exchanged gifts. Yamuna also served Yamadharmaraja with his favorite dishes. Yama who was overwhelmed by the love of his sister is believed to have said to Yamuna that who receives Tilak from his sister will have to never suffer hell. Since then “Yama Dwitiya” is observed as a symbol of love and affection between brothers and sisters. Ifthere is no sister, he can go to his friends’ sister’s house or can go to his sodaratte (mother-in law) house.After the bhojana, the brother has to serve gift to his sister.

ಸೋದರಬಿದಿಗೆ ಅಥವ ಯಮದ್ವಿತೀಯಾ ಎಂದು ಕಾರ್ತೀಕ ಶುಕ್ಲ ದ್ವಿತೀಯಕ್ಕೆ ಹೆಸರು ಬರಲು ಮುಖ್ಯ ಕಾರಣ -- ಈದಿನ ಯಮನು ತನ್ನ ತಂಗಿ ಯಮುನಾದೇವಿಯ ಮನೆಗೆ ಭೋಜನಕ್ಕೆ ಹೋಗಿದ್ದನಂತೆ !! ದೀಪಾವಳಿಯ ಮೂರೂ ದಿವಸವೂ ಅಪಮೃತ್ಯು ಬರಬಾರದೆಂದು ಮೃತ್ಯುವಿನ ದೇವತೆಯಾದ ಯಮಧರ್ಮನ ಪೂಜೆಯನ್ನು ದೀಪಬೆಳಗುವುದರೊಂದಿಗೆ ಆಚರಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ -- ಕಾರ್ತಿಕ ಮಾಸದಲ್ಲಿ ದೀಪದಾನ ಮಾಡುವುದರಿಂದ ಅಪಮೃತ್ಯು ಪರಿಹಾರವಾಗುವುದೆಂದು ತಿಳಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ .
ಸೋದರ ಸಹೋದರಿಯರ ಸಂಬಂಧ ಬಹಳ ಅನುರೂಪವಾದದ್ದು ! ಕಷ್ಟಸುಖಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಪರಸ್ಪರ ಇಬ್ಬರಲ್ಲೂ ಒಂದಾಗುವ ಹೊಂದಾಣಿಕೆಯ ಬೆಸುಗೆ ಈ ಸೋದರಸಂಬಂಧದ ಹೆಗ್ಗಳಿಕೆಯಾಗಿದೆ !
ಈ ಸೋದರಬಿದಿಗೆಯಂದು ತಮ್ಮ ಅಣ್ಣತಮ್ಮಂದಿರನ್ನು ಸಹೋದರಿಯರು ಊಟಕ್ಕೆ ಕರೆದು ಆದರದಿಂದ ಉಪಚರಿಸಿ ಆರತಿಮಾಡಿ ಉಡುಗೊರೆ ಕೊಟ್ಟು ಉಪಚರಿಸುವರು ಮತ್ತು ಸಹೋದರರು ತಾವೂ ಪ್ರೀತಿಯಿಂದ ಉಡುಗೊರೆಕೊಟ್ಟು ಹಿರಿಯರಾದರೆ ಆಶೀರ್ವಾದ ಮಾಡಿ ಕಿರಿಯರಾದರೆ ಆಶೀರ್ವಾದ ಪಡೆಯುವರು .
ಅಕ್ಕನ ತದಿಗೆ ಯತಂದು ಸಹೋದರಿಯರೆಲ್ಲಾ ಒಟ್ಟಿಗೇ ಸೇರಿ ಪರಸ್ಪರ ಹಬ್ಬಕ್ಕೆ ಉಡುಗೊರೆ ಕೊಟ್ಟು ಪಡೆದು ಒಟ್ಟಾಗಿ ಸಂತಸದಿಂದ ಭೋಜನ ಮಾಡುವರು .

ಯಮ ದ್ವಿತೀಯಾ
ಕಾರ್ತೀಮಾಸದ ಶುಕ್ಲಪಕ್ಷದ ದ್ವಿತೀಯಾ ದಿನದಂದು ಯಮನು ತನ್ನ ಸಹೋದರಿ ಯಮುನೆಯನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಭೋಜನವನ್ನು ಮಾಡಿದ್ದರಿಂದ ಈ ದಿನವನ್ನು ಯಮದ್ವಿತೀಯಾ ಎಂದು ಕರೆಯುತ್ತಾರೆ .
ಈದಿನ ಅಣ್ಣ ತಮ್ಮಂದಿರು ಅಕ್ಕತಂಗಿಯರಿಗೆ ಸ್ವರ್ಣ, ವಸ್ತ್ರಾದಿ ಅಲಂಕಾರಗಳನ್ನು ಕೊಟ್ಟು ಅವರ ಕೈಯಿಂದ ಊಟಮಾಡಬೇಕು ಹೀಗೆ ಮಾಡುವುದರಿಂದ ಅಕ್ಕತಂಗಿಯರ ಮಾಂಗಲ್ಯವು ಸ್ಥಿರವಾಗುವುದು
ಹಾಗೂ ಅಣ್ಣತಮ್ಮಂದಿರಿಗೆ ಪುಷ್ಟಿವುಂಟಾಗುತ್ತದೆ , ಐಶ್ವರ್ಯ ಪ್ರಾಪ್ತಿ ಯಾಗುತ್ತದೆ
ಸ್ನೇಹೇನ ಭಗಿನೀಹಸ್ತಾದ್ಭೋಕ್ತವ್ಯಂ ಪುಷ್ಟಿವರ್ಧನಂ ||

ಈ ದಿವಸ ಅಣ್ಣ-ತಮ್ಮಂದಿರಿಗೆ ಊಟಹಾಕುವಾಗ ಅಕ್ಕ-ತಂಗಿಯರು ಈ ಕೆಳಗಿನ ಶ್ಲೋಕವನ್ನು ಹೇಳಬೇಕು
ಭ್ರಾತಃ ತವಾನುಜಾತಾಹಂ ಭುಂಕ್ಷ್ವ ಭಕ್ಷ್ಯಮಿದಂ ಶುಭಮ್ |
ಪ್ರೀತಯೇ ಯಮರಾಜಸ್ಯ ಯಮೂನಾಯಾಃ ವಿಶೇಷತ ||
(ಅಕ್ಕನು ತಮ್ಮನಿಗೆ ಊಟಹಾಕುವುದಾದರೆ ಭ್ರಾತಃ ತವಾಗ್ರಜಾತಾಹಂ ಎಂದು ಶ್ಲೋಕದ ಮೊದಲ ಸಾಲಿನ ಅರ್ಧಭಾಗವನ್ನು ಬದಲು ಮಾಡಿಕೂಳ್ಳಬೇಕು.)
ಮರುದಿನ ಅಕ್ಕನತದಿಗೆ ಆದಿನ ಅಣ್ಣ ತಮ್ಮಂದಿರು ಅಕ್ಕತಂಗಿಯರನ್ನು ಸತ್ಕರಿಸಿ ಊಟಮಾಡಿಸುವ ವಾಡಿಕೆ ಉಂಟು.

ತಂಗಿ ಅಣ್ಣನಿಗೆ ತಿಲಕವಿಟ್ಟು, ಸಿಹಿ ತಿನ್ನಿಸಿ, ಆರತಿಎತ್ತುತ್ತಾಳೆಂಬ ಪ್ರತೀತಿ.

" ಭಗಿನೀ ದ್ವಿತೀಯಾ - ಯಮ ದ್ವಿತೀಯಾ - ಬಾವನ ಬಿದಿಗೆ " ಎಂದು ಕರೆಯಲ್ಪಡುವ ಈ ದಿನ ತಂಗಿಯ ಕೈಯಿಂದ ಎಣ್ಣೆ ಹೆಚ್ಚಿಸಿಕೊಂಡು ನೀರೆರೆಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವುದು ತುಂಬಾ ವಿಶೇಷ.
ಅದರಲ್ಲೂ ತಂಗಿಯು ತನ್ನ ಸಹೋದರರಿಗೆ ಬೆನ್ನಿಗೆ ಎಣ್ಣೆ ಹಚ್ಚುತ್ತಾ ಸಹೋದರನ ಕಷ್ಟ ಕಾರ್ಪಣ್ಯಗಳು ದೂರವಾಗಲಿ - ಸುಖ ಸಮೃದ್ಧಿ ತವರು ಮನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಶಾಶ್ವತವಾಗಿ ನೆಲೆಸಲಿ ಎಂದು ರೀತಿ ತುಂಬಿದ ಹೃದಯದಿಂದ ಹರಸುವಳು.
ಹಾಗೆಯೇ ವಿವಿಧ ಪದಾರ್ಥಗಳನ್ನು ಮಾಡಿ ನನ್ನ ಒಡಹುಟ್ಟಿದವರಿಗೆ ಸದಾಕಾಲ ಆಹಾರದ ಕೊರತೆ ಬಾರದಿರಲಿ - ಬಂದ ಅತಿಥಿಗಳಿಗೆ ನಿತ್ಯ ಅನ್ನದಾನ ಮಾಡುವ ಶಕ್ತಿ ಇರಲಿ ಎಂದು ಅನ್ನಪೂರ್ಣೆಯಂತೆ ಕೋರುವಳು.
ಹಿಂದೆ ಯಮನು ಈ ದಿನ ತನ್ನ ತಂಗಿಯಾದ ಯಮುನೆಯ ಮನೆಗೆ ಬಂದು ಅವಳಿಂದ ಆತಿಥ್ಯವನ್ನು ಸ್ವೀಕರಿಸಿದ ದಿನವು ಇದಾಗಿರುತ್ತದೆ.
ಇದರ ಕುರುಹಾಗಿ ಅಂದಿನಿಂದಲೂ ಈ ಪದ್ಧತಿಯು ರೂಢಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬಂದಿದೆ.
ತನ್ನ ತಂಗಿಯ ಅಭಿಮಾನಕ್ಕೆ ಪ್ರತಿಯಾಗಿ ಸಹೋದರರು ಬಾವನನ್ನೂ ತಂಗಿಯನ್ನೂ ನಾಳೆ [ ಭಗಿನೀ ತೃತೀಯಾ ] ನಮ್ಮ ಮನೆಗೆ ಬನ್ನಿ ಎಂದು ಆಮಂತ್ರಿಸುವರು.
