Kalabhairav Jayanti also known as ‘Mahakaal Bhairavashtami’ or ‘Kala Bhairav Ashtami’ is a Hindu festival dedicated to Lord Kaal Bhairav, the fearsome form of Lord Shiva. It is observed on the ‘ashtami’ (8th day) of the ‘Krishna Paksha’ (the period of waning phase of moon) during the Hindu lunar month of ‘Kartik’. In the Gregorian calendar, this date corresponds to the months of mid-November to mid-December. The festival of Kalabhairav Jayanti celebrates the birth anniversary of Kala Bhairav, the Hindu God of Time. This day is considered to be more auspicious when it falls on a Tuesday or Sunday as these days are dedicated to Lord Kala Bhairav.
Rituals during Kalabhairav Jayanti:
On the day of Kalabhairav Jayanti devotees worship Lord Kala Bhairav along with Shiva and Parvati with fruits, flowers and sweets. After the completion of puja, they also recite the Kalabhairav Katha.
Devotees get up early and take a ritualistic bath to perform special pujas and rituals for their dead ancestors on the day of Kalabhairav Jayanti.
On Kalabhairav Jayanti devotees keep vigil all night and narrate stories of Lord Kala Bhairav and Lord Shiva. They devotedly chant the mantras dedicated to Bhairav and perform the ‘aarti’ at midnight with traditional musical instruments like drums, bells and conches.
Some devotees even keep strict fasting during the day on Kalabhairav Jayanti. It is a popular belief that the observer of this vrat will be able to remove all obstacles from his/her life and gain all-round success.
As Lord Kala Bhairav rides on a dog, in some regions dogs are also fed with milk and sweets on this day.
Special rituals are held on this day in Lord Kala Bhairav’s temples all across India. People visit the temples in the evening and participate in the ‘Shodashopachar Puja’.
Significance of Kalabhairav Jayanti:
The day of Kalabhairav Jayanti holds immense significance for followers of Lord Shiva. This day commemorates the birthday of Lord Kala Bhairav who is known to be the fearful manifestation of Lord Shiva. According to the Hindu legends, when Lord Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh were discussing their superiority, Lord Shiva got infuriated by some remarks of Brahma. Lord Bhairav then appeared from Shiva’s forehead and severed one head of Lord Brahma, leaving Him with four heads. Lord Bhairav is seen holding a rod to punish the sinners and rides on a dog. Devotees worship Lord Shiva and Bhairav on the auspicious day of Kalabhairav Jayanti to seek forgiveness for their sins. Worshipping Lord Kala Bhairav on this day bestows good health and success. It is also believed that by worshipping Lord Kala Bhairav all the ‘Rahu’ and ‘Shani’ doshas can be nullified.

ಭೈರವ ಅಷ್ಟಮಿ, ಭೈರವಾಷ್ಟಮಿ, ಭೈರವ ಜಯಂತಿ, ಕಾಲ ಭೈರವ ಜಯಂತಿ ಎಂದೂ ಕರೆಯುವ ಕಾಲಭೈರವ ಅಷ್ಟಮಿ, ಭೈರವ ದೇವರ ಅಂದರೆ ಭಯಂಕರ ಹಾಗು ಕ್ರೌರ್ಯದಿಂದ ಇರುವ ದೇವರ ಹುಟ್ಟಿದ ಹಬ್ಬವನ್ನು ಸೂಚಿಸುವ ದಿನ. ಕೃಷ್ಣ ಪಕ್ಷದ ಕಾರ್ತೀಕ ಮಾಸದ ಅಷ್ಟಮಿಯಂದು ಈ ಜಯಂತಿ ಆಚರಿಸಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ.
ಕಾಲಭೈರವ ಅಷ್ಟಮಿಯ ಪುರಾಣದ ಕಥೆ
ಒಮ್ಮೆ, ವಿಷ್ಣು ಹಾಗು ಶಿವನಿಗೆ ಯಾರು ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಬಲಶಾಲಿಗಳೆನ್ನುವುದರ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಚರ್ಚೆ ಆಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಈ ಚರ್ಚೆ ಹೆಚ್ಚಾಗಿ ಶಿವನು ಎಲ್ಲಾ ಪಂಡಿತರನ್ನು ಹಾಗು ಋಷಿ ಮುನಿಗಳನ್ನು ಕರೆಸಿ ಒಂದು ಪರಿಹಾರವನ್ನು ಕಂಡು ಹಿಡಿಯಲು ಸಭೆಯನ್ನು ಸೇರಿಸುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಇದರಿಂದ ಒಂದು ಪರಿಹಾರವನ್ನು ಕಂಡು ಹಿಡಿದ ಮೇಲೆ ಆ ಪರಿಹಾರವನ್ನು ವಿಷ್ಣುವು ಒಪ್ಪಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಾನೆ ಆದರೆ ಬ್ರಹ್ಮನಲ್ಲ. ಇದರಿಂದ ಅವಮಾನಿತನಾಗಿ, ಶಿವನಿಗೆ ಕೋಪ ಬಂದು ವಿನಾಶಕಾರಿ ಅವತಾರವನ್ನು ತಾಳುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಈ ಹೊಸ ಅವತಾರವನ್ನು ಕಾಲ ಭೈರವ ಅವತಾರ ಎಂದು ಕರೆಯಲಾಯಿತು. ಈ ಅವತಾರದಲ್ಲಿ ಶಿವನು ಒಂದು ಶ್ವಾನದ ಮೇಲೆ ಕೂತು ಕೈಯಲ್ಲೊಂದು ದಂಡವನ್ನು ಹಿಡಿದಿರುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಹಾಗಾಗಿ ಅವನಿಗೆ ದಂಡಾಧಿಪತಿ ಎಂದೂ ಕರೆಯಲಾಯಿತು. ಈ ಭಯಂಕರ ಅವತಾರವನ್ನು ನೋಡಿದ ದೇವತೆಗಳಿಗೆ ಭಯವಾಗಿ, ಬ್ರಹ್ಮನು ಶಿವನ ಅವತಾರವಾದ ಕಾಲ ಭೈರವನ ಮುಂದೆ ಕ್ಷಮೆ ಯಾಚಿಸುತ್ತಾನೆ. ನಂತರ ಎಲ್ಲಾ ದೇವಾನು ದೇವತೆಗಳಿಂದ ಸಂತೈಸಲು ಪಟ್ಟ ನಂತರ ಶಿವನು ತನ್ನ ಅಸಲಿ ರೂಪಕ್ಕೆ ಮರಳುತ್ತಾನೆ.
ಕಾಲ ಭೈರವ ಅಷ್ಟಮಿ ಮಾಡುವ ವಿಧಾನ
ಕಾಲ ಭೈರವನನ್ನು ಪೂಜಿಸಲು ಭಕ್ತರು ಇಡೀ ರಾತ್ರಿ ಜಾಗರಣೆ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಾರೆ ಹಾಗು ಕಾಲ ಭೈರವನೊಂದಿಗೆ ಶಿವನನ್ನು ಹಾಗು ಪಾರ್ವತಿಯನ್ನೂ ಕೂಡ ಪೂಜಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಈ ಪೂಜೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಕಾಲ ಭೈರವನ ಕಥೆಯನ್ನು ಪಠಿಸುವುದೇ ಮುಖ್ಯವಾದ ಅಂಶ. ಕಾಲ ಭೈರವನ ವಾಹನ ಕರಿ ನಾಯಿ ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ ಅಂದಿನ ದಿನ ಕರಿ ನಾಯಿಗೆ ಊಟ ಹಾಕುವುದು ಪ್ರತಿತಿ. ಇದಲ್ಲದೆ, ಪವಿತ್ರವಾದ ನದಿಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಸ್ನಾನ ಮಾಡಿ, ನಂತರ ಶ್ರಾದ್ಧದ ಜೊತೆಗೆ ತರ್ಪಣ ಕೂಡ ಕೊಡುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಕೊನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ, ಭೈರವ ನಾಥನಿಗೆ ಪ್ರಾರ್ಥನೆಗಳನ್ನು ಮಾಡಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ.

ಕಾಲಭೈರವ ಅಷ್ಟಮಿಯ ಪುರಾಣದ ಕಥೆ
ಒಮ್ಮೆ, ವಿಷ್ಣು ಹಾಗು ಶಿವನಿಗೆ ಯಾರು ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಬಲಶಾಲಿಗಳೆನ್ನುವುದರ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಚರ್ಚೆ ಆಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಈ ಚರ್ಚೆ ಹೆಚ್ಚಾಗಿ ಶಿವನು ಎಲ್ಲಾ ಪಂಡಿತರನ್ನು ಹಾಗು ಋಷಿ ಮುನಿಗಳನ್ನು ಕರೆಸಿ ಒಂದು ಪರಿಹಾರವನ್ನು ಕಂಡು ಹಿಡಿಯಲು ಸಭೆಯನ್ನು ಸೇರಿಸುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಇದರಿಂದ ಒಂದು ಪರಿಹಾರವನ್ನು ಕಂಡು ಹಿಡಿದ ಮೇಲೆ ಆ ಪರಿಹಾರವನ್ನು ವಿಷ್ಣುವು ಒಪ್ಪಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಾನೆ ಆದರೆ ಬ್ರಹ್ಮನಲ್ಲ. ಇದರಿಂದ ಅವಮಾನಿತನಾಗಿ, ಶಿವನಿಗೆ ಕೋಪ ಬಂದು ವಿನಾಶಕಾರಿ ಅವತಾರವನ್ನು ತಾಳುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಈ ಹೊಸ ಅವತಾರವನ್ನು ಕಾಲ ಭೈರವ ಅವತಾರ ಎಂದು ಕರೆಯಲಾಯಿತು. ಈ ಅವತಾರದಲ್ಲಿ ಶಿವನು ಒಂದು ಶ್ವಾನದ ಮೇಲೆ ಕೂತು ಕೈಯಲ್ಲೊಂದು ದಂಡವನ್ನು ಹಿಡಿದಿರುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಹಾಗಾಗಿ ಅವನಿಗೆ ದಂಡಾಧಿಪತಿ ಎಂದೂ ಕರೆಯಲಾಯಿತು. ಈ ಭಯಂಕರ ಅವತಾರವನ್ನು ನೋಡಿದ ದೇವತೆಗಳಿಗೆ ಭಯವಾಗಿ, ಬ್ರಹ್ಮನು ಶಿವನ ಅವತಾರವಾದ ಕಾಲ ಭೈರವನ ಮುಂದೆ ಕ್ಷಮೆ ಯಾಚಿಸುತ್ತಾನೆ. ನಂತರ ಎಲ್ಲಾ ದೇವಾನು ದೇವತೆಗಳಿಂದ ಸಂತೈಸಲು ಪಟ್ಟ ನಂತರ ಶಿವನು ತನ್ನ ಅಸಲಿ ರೂಪಕ್ಕೆ ಮರಳುತ್ತಾನೆ.
ಕಾಲ ಭೈರವ ಅಷ್ಟಮಿ ಮಾಡುವ ವಿಧಾನ
ಕಾಲ ಭೈರವನನ್ನು ಪೂಜಿಸಲು ಭಕ್ತರು ಇಡೀ ರಾತ್ರಿ ಜಾಗರಣೆ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಾರೆ ಹಾಗು ಕಾಲ ಭೈರವನೊಂದಿಗೆ ಶಿವನನ್ನು ಹಾಗು ಪಾರ್ವತಿಯನ್ನೂ ಕೂಡ ಪೂಜಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಈ ಪೂಜೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಕಾಲ ಭೈರವನ ಕಥೆಯನ್ನು ಪಠಿಸುವುದೇ ಮುಖ್ಯವಾದ ಅಂಶ. ಕಾಲ ಭೈರವನ ವಾಹನ ಕರಿ ನಾಯಿ ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ ಅಂದಿನ ದಿನ ಕರಿ ನಾಯಿಗೆ ಊಟ ಹಾಕುವುದು ಪ್ರತಿತಿ. ಇದಲ್ಲದೆ, ಪವಿತ್ರವಾದ ನದಿಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಸ್ನಾನ ಮಾಡಿ, ನಂತರ ಶ್ರಾದ್ಧದ ಜೊತೆಗೆ ತರ್ಪಣ ಕೂಡ ಕೊಡುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಕೊನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ, ಭೈರವ ನಾಥನಿಗೆ ಪ್ರಾರ್ಥನೆಗಳನ್ನು ಮಾಡಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ.

ಭಗವಾನ್ ಶಿವನ ರುದ್ರ ರೂಪವಾದ ಕಾಲಭೈರವನನ್ನು ಕಾಲಭೈರವ ಜಯಂತಿಯಂದು ಪೂಜಿಸಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ ಎಂಬುದು ನಮಗೆಲ್ಲಾ ತಿಳಿದಿರುವ ವಿಷಯ. ಧಾರ್ಮಿಕ ಅಂಶಗಳಿಗೆ ಸಂಬಂಧಿಸಿದಂತೆ, ಸರಿಯಾದ ಆಚರಣೆಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ಸರಿಯಾದ ಕಾಳಜಿಯೊಂದಿಗೆ ಉಪವಾಸವನ್ನು ಆಚರಿಸುವುದರಿಂದ ನಮ್ಮೊಳಗಿನ ಭಯವನ್ನು ಕಾಲ ಭೈರವನು ದೂರಾಗಿಸುತ್ತಾನೆ ಎನ್ನುವ ನಂಬಿಕೆಯಿದೆ. ಇದರೊಂದಿಗೆ, ಅವನು ಗ್ರಹಗಳಿಗೆ ಸಂಬಂಧಿಸಿದ ದೋಷವನ್ನು ಮತ್ತು ಶತ್ರುಗಳಿಂದ ಉಂಟಾಗುವ ಸಮಸ್ಯೆಗಳನ್ನು ಸುಲಭವಾಗಿ ನಿವಾರಿಸುತ್ತಾನೆ.
