WORSHIP OF THRESHOLD AND TULASI BRINDAVANA

The hymn to be recited while offering worship to the Threshold: 

HreenkArarUpiNee dEvi veeNA pustakaDhAriNee| 

VEdamAtarnamastuBhyam mAngalyam dEhi mE sadA||

MAngalyABharaNairyuktE mangaLE sarvamangaLE|

GruhalakShmirDhAnyalakShmirdwAralakShmirnamOstutE||

(Oh Goddess beholding Veena and book, you are the personification of HreenkAra. I salute You, the Mother of all Vedas and beseek from you the protection of my Mangalya. Adorned with Mangalya, the holiest of jewels, you are the epitome of goodness and you are goodness personified. You are the Lakshmi of Homes, Grains and the Door and I salute you, my Goddess.)

While there are several ways and deities for women to offer worship, the worship of threshold and the Brindavan in which holy Tulasi is implanted is prominent. Married women and even unmarried girls should compulsorily invoke Goddess Lakshmibharati in the threshold and worship her. Threshold should be cleansed before having bath and the symbol of Swastik should be depicted at the middle point with Rangoli, the powdered stone. Threshold should be worshipped immediately after bathing. In some places, cleansing the threshold is also done after bath. According to scriptures, threshold should be worshipped only after having bath.

Place a water-filled urn at the middle point of the threshold, worship it with Mangala Dravyas such as Arishina, Kumkum, Akshata, fresh flowers and Gejje Vastra prepared with pure cotton. The hymn mentioned above i.e. Hreenkararupinee… should be recited while prostrating before the water-filled urn and the threshold in the traditional manner. Even if the worship is offered to the threshold of the room meant exclusively for keeping the deity of the choice of the family members owing to constraints of maintaining cleanliness and convenience, the main threshold should be compulsorily adorned with Rangoli. As prescribed by scriptures and hymn “AshUnyA dEhalee kAryA…”, the main threshold should never be blank. Moreover, efforts should be made to ensure that dust or waste particles do not get deposited in any part of the main threshold. None of the household items should ever be placed on the threshold. One should be inside the house while worshipping the threshold. Face should be turned towards the interior of the house while offering worship to the threshold. However, in some places the worship is offered to the main threshold by standing outside the house too. What is most essential while offering worship is devotion, dedication and proper invocation. Slight variations in the method of worship do not matter much.

Another important principle is that the worship to threshold of the room exclusively meant for family deities should be offered by standing outside and not inside.

ಹೊಸ್ತಿಲ ನಮಸ್ಕಾರಕ್ಕೆ ಹೇಳುವ ಶ್ಲೋಕ:

ಹ್ರೀಂಕಾರರೂಪಿಣೀ ದೇವಿ ವೀಣಾ ಪುಸ್ತಕಧಾರಿಣೀ |

ವೇದಮಾತರ್ನಮಸ್ತುಭ್ಯಂ ಮಾಂಗಲ್ಯಂ ದೇಹಿ ಮೇ ಸದಾ ||

ಮಾಂಗಲ್ಯಾಭರಣೈರ್ಯುಕ್ತೇ ಮಂಗಳೇ ಸರ್ವಮಂಗಳೇ |

ಗೃಹಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಿರ್ಧಾನ್ಯಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಿರ್ದ್ವಾರಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಿರ್ನಮೋಽಸ್ತುತೇ ||

ಸ್ತ್ರೀಯರಿಗೆ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಿದೇವಿಯ ಆರಾಧನೆಗೆ ಹಲವು ಪ್ರತೀಕಗಳಿವೆ. ಅವುಗಳಲ್ಲಿ, ಹೊಸ್ತಿಲು ಮತ್ತು ತುಳಸೀವೃಂದಾವನ ಪೂಜೆ ಪ್ರಮುಖವಾದವು. ಮನೆಯ ಮುತ್ತೈದೆಯರೆಲ್ಲರೂ ಹೊಸ್ತಿಲಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮೀಭಾರತಿಯರನ್ನು ಪೂಜಿಸಬೇಕು. ಹೊಸ್ತಿಲು ಮತ್ತು ತುಳಸೀವೃಂದಾವನ ಪೂಜೆಯನ್ನು ಕನ್ಯೆಯರೂ ಕಡ್ಡಾಯವಾಗಿ ಮಾಡತಕ್ಕದ್ದು. ಸ್ನಾನಕ್ಕೆ ಮೊದಲೇ ಹೊಸ್ತಿಲು ಬಳಿದು, ಸ್ವಸ್ತಿಕೆ ಬರೆದು, ಅಲಂಕರಿಸಿ ಸ್ನಾನಾನಂತರ ಪೂಜಿಸಬಹುದು. ಕೆಲವೆಡೆ ಸ್ನಾನಾನಂತರ ಹೊಸ್ತಿಲು ಬರೆಯುವ ಸಂಪ್ರದಾಯವಿದೆ. ಶಾಸ್ತ್ರರೀತ್ಯಾ ಸ್ನಾನಾನಂತರದ ಹೊಸ್ತಿಲಪೂಜೆ ಉತ್ತಮ. 

ಶುದ್ಧಜಲಪೂರ್ಣವಾದ ತಂಬಿಗೆಯನ್ನು ಹೊಸ್ತಿಲ ಮಧ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿಟ್ಟು ಮಂಗಳದ್ರವ್ಯಗಳಿಂದ ಪೂಜಿಸಿ, “ಹ್ರೀಂಕಾರರೂಪಿಣೀ...” ಎಂಬ ಶ್ಲೋಕಗಳಿಂದ ನಮಸ್ಕರಿಸಿ, ಹೊಸ್ತಿಲಿಗೆ ಅರ್ಪಿಸಿದ್ದ ಒಂದು ಹೂವನ್ನು ಮುಡಿದುಕೊಂಡು, ಕೈತೊಳೆದು, ತಂಬಿಗೆಯನ್ನು ಕೆಳಗಿಳಿಸಬೇಕು (ಹೊಸ್ತಿಲುಪೂಜೆ ಮುಗಿಯುವ ತನಕ ಯಾರೂ ಹೊಸ್ತಿಲು ದಾಟಬಾರದು,).

ಗೃಹದ ಪ್ರಧಾನದ್ವಾರವನ್ನು ಹೊಸ್ತಿಲುಪೂಜೆಗಾಗಿ ಆರಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳಬೇಕು. ಅನುಕೂಲತೆ ಹಾಗೂ ಶುದ್ಧಿಯ ಕಾರಣಗಳಿಂದ ದೇವರ ಕೋಣೆಯ ದ್ವಾರವನ್ನು ಪೂಜಿಸಿದರೂ, ಪ್ರಧಾನದ್ವಾರದಲ್ಲೂ ರಂಗೊಲಿ ಇರಬೇಕು. ”ಅಶೂನ್ಯಾ ದೇಹಲೀ ಕಾರ್ಯಾ...” ಎಂಬಂತೆ ಹೊಸ್ತಿಲು ಬೋಳಾಗಿರಕೂಡದು. ಕಸಕಡ್ಡಿಗಳಿಂದ ತುಂಬಿರಕೂಡದು. ಗೃಹವಸ್ತುಗಳನ್ನು ಹೊಸ್ತಿಲಲ್ಲಿಡಕೂಡದು. ಮನೆಯೊಳಗಿದ್ದೇ ಹೊಸ್ತಿಲ ಪೂಜೆಯನ್ನು ಮಾಡಬೇಕು. ಹೊರಗಿನಿಂದ ಒಳಮುಖವಾಗಿ ಮಾಡಬಾರದು. ಆದರೂ ಲಕ್ಶ್ಮೀದೇವಿಯನ್ನು ಬರಮಾಡಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವಾಗ, ಹೊಸ್ತಿಲ ಹೊರಗೆ ನಿಂತು ಆಕೆಯನ್ನು ಆಹ್ವಾನಿಸುವ ಮತ್ತು ಆವಾಹಿಸುವ ಸಂಪ್ರದಾಯವು ಕೆಲವೆಡೆ ಪ್ರಚಲಿತವಾಗಿರುತ್ತದೆ. ಯಾವುದೇ ಪೂಜೆಯಲ್ಲೂ ಶ್ರದ್ಧೆ, ಭಕ್ತಿ ಮತ್ತು ಅನುಸಂಧಾನಗಳು ಪ್ರಮುಖವಾಗುತ್ತವೆ. ಕ್ರಮಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಅಲ್ಪಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ವ್ಯತ್ಯಯಗಳಿದ್ದರೂ ಯಾವುದೇ ಲೋಪವಿರುವುದಿಲ್ಲ.

ದೇವರ ಕೋಣೆಯ ಹೊಸ್ತಿಲಿಗೆ ಮಾತ್ರ ಹೊರಗಿನಿಂದ ಪೂಜಿಸಬೇಕು.
