Modern thinkers say that Ramanuja may have lived between 1077-1157 CE

He is also known as Sri Ramanujacharya, Udayavar, Ethirajar, Bhashyakarar, Godaagrajar, Thiruppavai Jeeyar, Emberumannar and Lakshmana Muni

Ramanuja was born in 1017 CE to a Tamil Brahmin family in Sriperambattur and is said to have lived up to 120 years. Very little is known about his life other than the legends that surround him and biographies that were written by his ardent followers. At his birthplace now stands a temple and a Vishishtadvaita school. He was a temple priest at the Varadaraja temple at Kanchi, around the time he started to propagate his beliefs. By merging Bhakti into the philosophy, he gave Bhakti an intellectual ground. Ever since, bhakti has remained the major force in the religion.

Ramanuja married, moved to Kanchipuram, started of his learning under Yadhava Prakasha, but he was in disagreement with his Guru and started to look for guru who was more agreeable to his way of thinking. He found that in Yamunacharya or Alavandar. But unfortunately for him Yamunacharya passed away before Ramanuja could meet him. But when he went see the dead body, legend has it that 3 of Yamunacharya’s fingers were folded, indicating 3 unfulfilled desires which were (a) to write commentary on Brahma Sutras (b) that the names of Sri Parasara and Vyasa are conserved, and (c) propagate the Vishishtadvaita philosophy. As Ramanuja vowed to fulfill these wishes, the fingers opened up. Some hagiographies story goes on to say that the corpse of Yamunacharya miraculously rose and named Ramanuja as the new leader of Sri Vaishnava sect previously led by Yamunacharya.

After leaving Yadava Prakasa some legends say, Ramanuja was initiated into Sri Vaishnavism by Periya Nambi, also called Mahapurna after which renounced his married life, and became a Monk, but that is still a topic of debate.

Ramanuja became the priest at the Srirangam temple, where he began to teach about Vishnu reformed the temple complex, undertook tours, and expanded the teaching. Ramanuja was a very open mined person, treated everyone equal and encouraged others to do it too. It is because of him that Thirumala today is open to all and so is the temple at Melkote in Karnataka. He set an example as can be seen from the various incidents of his life. Ramanuja's fame grew because he was considered the first thinker in centuries that disputed Shankara's theories, and offered an alternate interpretation of Upanishadic scriptures.

ಶ್ರೀ ರಾಮಾನುಜಾಚಾರ್ಯರು ತಮ್ಮ 120ನೇ ( ಕ್ರಿ ಶ 1137 ) ವಯಸ್ಸಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಶ್ರೀ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರ ಶ್ರೀರಂಗಂ ನಲ್ಲಿ ಶ್ರೀ ರಂಗನಾಥನ ಪಾದಾರವಿಂದ ಸೇರಿದರು.

ಯೋನಿತ್ಯಂ ಅಚ್ಯುತ ಪದಾಂಬುಜ ಯುಗ್ಮರುಕ್ಮ
ವ್ಯಾಮೋಹತಸ್ಥಧಿತರಾಮಿತ್ರಿನಾಯಮೇನೆ ।

ಶ್ರೀ ವಿಷ್ಣು ಸಹಸ್ರನಾಮ ಮತ್ತು ಅದರ ಮಹತ್ವದ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಹಿರಿಯರೊಬ್ಬರಿಂದ ಕೇಳಿ ತಿಳಿದ ವಿಚಾರ ....

ತಿರುಚ್ಚಿಯ ಶ್ರೀರಂಗನಾಥ ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನ , ಅಲ್ಲಿ ಬೆಳಗಿನ ಪೂಜೆ ಆದ ಬಳಿಕ ದೇವರಿಗೆ ಸಮರ್ಪಣೆ ಮಾಡಿದ ಪ್ರಸಾದವನ್ನು ನೆರೆದ ಭಕ್ತರಿಗೆ ಹಂಚುವುದು ವಾಡಿಕೆ .ಹಾಗೆ ಅದನ್ನು ಸ್ವಕರಿಸಲು ಭಕ್ತರೆಲ್ಲರೂ ಸರದಿಯ ಸಾಲಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಬಂದು ಭಕ್ತಿಯಿಂದ ಸ್ವೀಕರಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದಾಗ ಕಡು ಬಡವ ಹಿರಿಯರೊಬ್ಬರು ಸರದಿಯ ಸಾಲಿನಲ್ಲಿ ನಿಲ್ಲದೆ ಎಲ್ಲರನ್ನು ದೂಡಿ ಮುಂದೆಹೋಗಿ ನಿಲ್ಲುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು ಅಲ್ಲದೆ ಕೈಯಲ್ಲಿ ದೊಡ್ಡದೊಂದು ಪಾತ್ರೆಯನ್ನು ಹಿಡಿದು ಪ್ರಸಾದವನ್ನು ಕೇಳುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು. ನಾನು ಬಡವ ನನಗೆ 6 ಜನ ಮಕ್ಕಳಿದ್ದಾರೆ , ಇದು ಸಿಗದಿದ್ದರೆ ಅವರೆಲ್ಲ ನಿರಾಹಾರರಾಗ ಬೇಕಾಗುತ್ತದೆ ಎನ್ನುತ್ತಾ ಪ್ರಸಾದವನ್ನು ಕೇಳಿ ಪಡೆಯುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು. ಆದರೆ ಇದು ಪ್ರಸಾದ ಹಂಚುವ ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನದವರಿಗೆ ಮುಜುಗರ ತರುತ್ತಿತ್ತು, ಹಾಗಾಗಿ ಅವರು ನೇರವಾಗಿ ಶ್ರೀಪಾದ ರಾಮಾನುಜರ ಬಳಿ ದೂರು ಕೊಟ್ಟರು.

ಇದನ್ನು ಕೇಳಿದ ಶ್ರೀಪಾದ ರಾಮಾನುಜರು ಆ ಬಡವನನ್ನು ನೋಡಿ ವಿಚಾರ ತಿಳಿಯಲೆಂದು ಒಂದು ದಿನ ಪ್ರಸಾದ ಹಂಚುವಲ್ಲಿಗೆ ಬಂದು ಆ ಬಡವ ಹಿರಿಯರನ್ನು ಕಂಡು ಯಾಕೆ ಹೀಗೆ ಮಾಡುತ್ತೀರಿ ಎನ್ನಲು . ಆ ಬಡವ ಹಿರಿಯರು ಸ್ವಾಮಿ ನಾನು ಬಡವ ನನಗೆ 6 ಜನ ಸಣ್ಣಸಣ್ಣ ಮಕ್ಕಳಿದ್ದಾರೆ , ಹೊಟ್ಟೆಗೆ ಗತಿಯಿಲ್ಲ ಹಾಗಾಗಿ ನಾನು ಎಲ್ಲರನ್ನು ಹಿಂದೆಹಾಕಿ ಮುಂದೆನಿಂತು ಪಾತ್ರೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರಸಾದ ಕೇಳುತ್ತೇನೆ. ಸಾಲಿನಲ್ಲಿ ನಿಂತರೆ ಎಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರಸಾದ ಖಾಲಿಯಾಗುತ್ತದೆಯೋ ಅನ್ನುವ ತವಕ..

ವಿಚಾರ ತಿಳಿದ ಶ್ರೀಪಾದ ರಾಮಾನುಜರು ಆ ಹಿರಿಯರನ್ನು ನಿಮಗೆ ಶ್ರೀ ವಿಷ್ಣುಸಹಸ್ರನಾಮ ಹೇಳಲು ಬರುತ್ತದೆಯೋ ಅನ್ನಲು ಹಿರಿಯರು ನಾನು ಕಲಿತವನಲ್ಲ .. ಆದರೆ ಇಲ್ಲಿ ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನದಲ್ಲಿ ಅಲ್ಪ ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ಕೇಳಿದ್ದೇನೆ.. ಶ್ರೀ ವಿಷ್ಣುಸಹಸ್ರನಾಮವನ್ನು...

ಹಾಗಾದರೆ ನಿನಗೆ ಬರುವಷ್ಟು ಹೇಳು ಅನ್ನಲು ಆತ ವಿಶ್ವಂ ವಿಷ್ಣುರ್ವಷಟ್ಕಾರೋ ಭೂತಭವ್ಯಭವತ್ಪ್ರಭುಃ |

ಭೂತಕೃದ್ಭೂತಭೃದ್ಭಾವೋ ... ಅನ್ನುತ್ತಲೇ ಶ್ರೀರಾಮಾನುಜರು ಅಂದರೆ ನಿನಗೆ ಶ್ರೀ ವಿಷ್ಣುವಿನ ಸಾವಿರ ಹೆಸರಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಆರು ಹೆಸರು ಮಾತ್ರ ಬರುತ್ತದೆ .. ಹೌದು ನಾನು ಕಲಿತವನಲ್ಲ... ಆಗ ಶ್ರೀಪಾದರು ಅದಕ್ಕೇನು ಬೇಸರವಿಲ್ಲ ಅದರಲ್ಲಿ ಬರುವ ಆರನೆಯ ಹೆಸರು ಭೂತ-ಭೃತ್: ಅಂದರೆ ಎಲ್ಲಾ ಜೀವಿಗಳನ್ನು ಪೋಷಿಸುವವನು ಎಂದು , ನೀನು ಶ್ರದ್ದೆ ಮತ್ತು ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಭಕ್ತಿಯಿಂದ ಆ ಆರನೆಯ ಹೆಸರನ್ನು ಜಪಮಾಡು ಅದರಿಂದ ನಿನ್ನ ಕಷ್ಟ ಪರಿಹಾರವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ ಎಂದು ಆತನಿಗೆ ಶ್ರೀ ಭೂತ-ಭೃತ್ಯಯೇ ನಮಃ ಅನ್ನುವಂತೆ ಉಪದೇಶಿಸಿದರು..

ಕೆಲದಿನಗಳ ಬಳಿಕ ಶ್ರೀಪಾದರು ಪ್ರಸಾದ ಹಂಚುವವರನ್ನು ಆ ಹಿರಿಯ ವಿಚಾರದಲ್ಲಿ ಕೇಳಿದಾಗ ಅವರು ಸ್ವಾಮಿ ಅವರು ಈಗ ಬರುತ್ತಿಲ್ಲ . ಏನಾಗಿದೆ ಅಂತ ಗೊತ್ತಿಲ್ಲ. ಬಹಳಷ್ಟು ಸಮಯ ವಾಯಿತು ಅವರನ್ನು ನೋಡದೆ.. ಆದರೆ ಒಂದು ವಿಚಾರ ದೇವರಿಗೆ ಸಮರ್ಪಣೆ ಮಾಡಿದ ಪ್ರಸಾದ ಪೂಜೆಯ ಬಳಿಕ ನೋಡಿದರೆ ಯಾರೋ ತೆಗೆದಂತೆ ಕಾಣುತ್ತದೆ . ಆ ಹಿರಿಯರು ಹೇಗೋ ಬಂದು ಅದನ್ನು ತೆಗೆಯುತ್ತಾರಾ ಏನೋ ಅನ್ನುವ ಸಂಶಯ ವ್ಯಕ್ತ ಪಡಿಸಿದರು. ಶ್ರೀಪಾದರು ಒಂದು ದಿನ ನೋಡಲು ಪ್ರಸಾದ ಪೂಜೆಯ ಬಳಿಕ ಕಮ್ಮಿಯಾದದ್ದನ್ನು ಕಂಡು...

ಶ್ರೀಪಾದರು ಆ ಹಿರಿಯರನ್ನು ಕಾಣಲು ನದಿಯನ್ನು ದಾಟಿ ಹಿರಿಯರಿದ್ದ ಸಣ್ಣ ಗುಡಿಸಲಿನತ್ತ ಹೋದಾಗ ಹಿರಿಯರು ಶ್ರೀಪಾದರ ಕಾಲಿಗೆ ನಮಸ್ಕರಿಸಿ ತಾವು ಮಹಾನ್ ಮಹಿಮರು ನಮ್ಮ ಕಷ್ಟಗಳೆಲ್ಲ ಪರಿಹಾರವಾಯಿತು. ಅಲ್ಲಿಗೆ ಪ್ರಸಾದಕ್ಕೆ ಬರಬೇಕಾಗಿಲ್ಲ ದಿನಾ ನೀವು ಕಳುಹಿಸಿದ ಹುಡುಗ ಬಂದು ನಮಗೆ ಬೇಕಾದಷ್ಟು ಪ್ರಸಾದವನ್ನು ಕೊಟ್ಟು ಹೋಗುತ್ತಿದ್ದಾನೆ . ನಿಮಗೆ ತುಂಬುದು ಹೃದಯದ ಧನ್ಯವಾದಗಳು ಅನ್ನುತ್ತಲೇ ಶ್ರೀಪಾದರಿಗೆ ಅರಿವಾಯಿತು ಇದೆಲ್ಲ ಶ್ರೀ ರಂಗನಾಥನ ಮಹಿಮೆ ....

ಭೂತ-ಭೃತ್: ಎಲ್ಲಾ ಜೀವಿಗಳನ್ನು ಪೋಷಿಸುವವನು ಅವನೇ ಹಾಗಿರುವಾಗ ಭಕ್ತಿಯಿಂದ ಪೂಜಿಸಿದ ಜಪಮಾಡಿದ ಹಿರಿಯರನ್ನು ಹೇಗೆಬಿಟ್ಟುಹೋಗುತ್ತಾನೆ ಎಂದು ಮನದಲ್ಲಿಯೇ ನೆನೆಸಿದರು. ಅಲ್ಲದೆ ಭಗವದ್ಗೀತೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಶ್ರೀ ಕೃಷ್ಣ ಹೇಳಿದ ಮಾತು ಮತ್ತೆ ನೆನಪಾಯಿತು. ನಚ ಮಸ್ತಾನಿ ಭೂತಾನಿ .. ಪಶ್ಯಾಮಿ ಯೋಗ ಮಸ್ವರಂ..

ಶ್ರೀ ವಿಷ್ಣುಸಹಸ್ರನಾಮದ ಪ್ರತಿಯೊಂದು ಹೆಸರು ಅದರದೇ ಆದ ಮಹತ್ವವನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿದೆ ಅದನ್ನು ಅರಿತು ಪಠಿಸಿದರೆ ಒಳ್ಳೆಯದು...
